Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are driver qualifications for employment?
A. Drivers for Special Service must possess a Class A CDL, current DOT physical, and pass a pre-employment drug screen, and complete background check.
Q. What if I do not have one of these qualifications?
A. You would need to contact an accredited truck driving school such as
Great Lakes Truck Driving School, or Hamrick Truck Driving School to obtain
your Class A CDL. If you do not currently have DOT physical, one may be
obtained by visiting a doctor’s office or clinic.
Q. What is the service area of SST?
A. SST's dedicated fleet of 53ft dry vans service the Continental
USA. Through our brokerage division we are able to service world-wide shipping
needs.
Q. How long has SST been in operation?
A. Since 1946
Q. What is an MC #?
A. This is an operating authority number that is assigned to carriers licensed
to haul interstate shipments.
Q. What is the difference between an MC Number and a DOT Number?
A. A US DOT number classifies carriers operating in interstate exchanges
while an MC Number is assigned to carriers who transport regulated commodities
in interstate exchanges. To determine whether an MC Number versus a DOT
Number is required is made by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Q. What is a freight class?
A. A freight class is determined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA), and can be dependent on the density, value, storability, handling,
and liability of your freight. There are 18 freight classes, ranging from
Class 50 all the way up to Class 500. Generally, lower classed freight will
be cheaper to ship
Q. How can I find my freight class?
A. We would be happy to help you find the freight class. By entering in
some information about your item here we can assist you in determining the
proper freight class. You can also contact the NMFTA directly at (703)838-1810
Q. Can I have a shipment picked up from my residence?
A. Absolutely! If your freight is packaged properly, we can pick it up directly
from your residence.
Q. What is the claims process?
A. In the unfortunate incidence that your freight should get damaged while
shipping with Special Service Transportation, the claims process would work
one of two ways. If your freight was hauled by one of our dedicated trucks,
the claim would go directly through SST and be resolved in a timely manner.
If the freight was shipped through our brokerage, the claim would be submitted
directly to the carrier that damaged the freight. SST would be happy to
assist in this process to make sure it is resolved in a timely manner and
to your satisfaction.
Q. What is a Bill of Lading (BOL)?
A. A legal document which acknowledges the receipt of a shipment of goods.
The document is presented to the driver upon pickup of the freight, and
signed off on by both the shipper and the driver. The document is again
presented upon receipt of the goods by both the consignee and the driver.
The document contains information including, but not limited to, a description
of the freight, piece count, shipping and receiving addresses, and a billing
party.
